We're excited to launch the Blue Christmas program for Harvey County this year. Blue Christmas allows us the opportunity to purchase presents for families who could use a little help providing gifts for a child. Our friends in the Newton Police Department have taken part in this program for years and continue to do so, and we want to do our part to extend it to reach families throughout Harvey County.

Our deputies help contribute, buy, wrap and deliver the presents ourselves just before Christmas. It's another way for us to demonstrate how important our community members are to us.

If you would like to make a financial contribution, or if you know someone you would like to nominate as a recipient of the Blue Christmas program, please contact Sgt. Austin Gronau at 316-284-6960 or [email protected]. You can also visit us at the Sheriff's Office during regular business hours.

When nominating an individual, please provide a name for the parent and child, contact information and why that individual is a good candidate to be a recipient. Space is limited. Law enforcement agencies across Kansas, including our office, will be taking part in the Thanksgiving Safe Arrival traffic enforcement campaign Nov. 21 through Dec. 1.

This initiative enforces all traffic laws, but is focused on seat belt enforcement. The goal of this campaign is to educate individuals about the importance and safety of seat belt use. The county commission recently approved moving ahead with construction to remodel the county-owned building at 215 S. Pine St. in Newton.

The commission accepted a bid from Vogts Construction for $1,877,000 for the project. Vogts' was the lowest of four bids received. The project is anticipated to fall under budget - the commission set aside about $4.1 million in its adopted 2025 budget for the total costs of the renovation.

The county began the process to buy the three-story building in 2022. The county had rented the second floor of the facility for the Harvey County Health Department since 2015, which remains in the same location after the purchase was finalized.

The Pine Street facility will be renovated to eventually move other county departments into the building. The State of Kansas directed two judgeship positions be added to the Ninth Judicial District in 2022, which will require more judicial space at the Harvey County Courthouse. Utilizing the building on Pine Street for county departments will help alleviate space concerns.

Construction on the Pine Street remodel is tentatively scheduled to begin in January. A reminder that deer accidents increase sharply this time of year. Stay focused on the road!**Bucky! Doe-rothy! Check out that sweet ride! Let's go get a closer look!**

Oh, deer. It's the time of year when deer activity increases, and they'll make a run for it across roadways. Our office alone recorded 140 deer vs. vehicle accidents in 2023, and 46% occurred over October, November and December. As October began this year, we'd already responded to 85 deer wrecks as we head into the busiest season.

Unfortunately, these accidents are so quick that they're often unavoidable. Staying alert and focused on the road is critical, especially at night. Using high-beam lights where appropriate to help illuminate the road can help. If you spot one deer, slow down and assume others are nearby.

Deer accidents are possible all year, but this is the peak season. Drive safe.
